A “data journalist” in every journalist: journalism and statistics in the datafied and post-truth era

The rise of the somewhat technologically determinist “data journalism” concept can distract us from one very basic fact: we have always, at least since the early 20th century, needed good “data journalists”. Yet journalists, due to rich range of socio-cultural, institutional and even epistemological challenges, journalists do not have a good reputation for their work with numbers and statistics. This paper discusses the key issues that need to be addressed, rather urgently, if journalism is to be able to benefit from datafied societies as well as to rise up to the risks of the emotionally driven post-truth era. Technological solutions, such as easy-to-use data analysis and visualization software, are important but do not get to the core of the issue: what is more needed is to build and foster a “statistical mindset” in every journalist through a numbers-friendly and numbers-ready newsroom culture. I will rebuke some traditional myths about journalists’ potential and actual ability to deal with statistics as well as suggest a formula-free curriculum to teach statistical reasoning as journalism (and not as math) in newsrooms and classrooms.
